DIAMONDS

Diamonds represent luxury, romance and lasting love. Until the twentieth century diamonds were so rare that only royalty and the very wealthy could wear them. But today diamonds are available to everyone in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, colors, qualities and affordable prices.

The diamond worn in an engagement ring is an established symbol of marital love. The tradition began in the 15th century when Archduke Maximilian of Austria sealed his engagement to Mary of Burgundy with a diamond ring.

Diamonds were created millions of years ago deep within the earth under tremendous heat and pressure. Then, through volcanic action, they were forced upward where they settled in pipes of kimberlite rock. No other stone can match the hardness of diamond, which is 2000 times harder than rubies or sapphires.

No other gemstone is so hard to find or difficult to mine. Indeed, the larger the diamond the rarer it can be. Diamonds are mined throughout the world but only 20% are gem quality, the rest are used in industry.

Diamonds are judged by their Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat Weight, sometimes called "the 4 C’s". Each diamond has its own characteristics and no two stones are exactly alike. The value of a diamond depends on these characteristics and their relative scarcity. A beautiful diamond is a complex blend of reflected color—a sparkling dance of brilliance and fire.
